About the Work

The Paintings

The inspiration for this work is born from poetry, objects from the physical world such as x-rays, a gnarly tree branch a friend gave me, the human body, including a life-size model of a human skeleton that stands quietly in my studio, as well as, the moon and photographs taken by the Hubble Telescope. I also work from images I have compiled from magazines and newspapers. These images hang on a wall directly over my pallet, always accessible for visual stimulation.

In recent years I have completed five series. The smallest series consists of three paintings while the largest contains 34. There is no significance to the number of paintings in each series except that the end comes when I have nothing left to say within the parameters I have set up for each specific body of work. One or two elements always carry through each painting in a particular series. Because one series leads to the next, there are common threads that connect all of my work together. These common threads exist in the execution of the work and in my fascination with light coming out of the dark. I approach each painting in the same physical, energetic way. Always starting on the floor, I attack each surface with house-paint brushes, making large, flowing movements of color. Energy rises and falls throughout the entire process of making a painting and the result is an exact reflection of that rhythm.

Medium
After years of working in oil paint I made the switch to acrylic for the reason most oil painters don't like working in acrylic: It dries fast. This suits the fact that I work quickly. It allows me to work and rework surfaces in a short period of time without muddying the color.

Breaking Through is the title of my most recent series of work. This ongoing body of work currently includes 18 paintings and is named for my love of light breaking through darkness. The paintings are primarily inspired by x-ray and CT scan imagery along with the full moon and other images captured by the Hubble Telescope. This work is an exploration of the simplicity, drama, mystery and beauty each image conveys to me.
