ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Through my work in murals and ceramics, I create safe spaces and empowering images for women. My art is representational and narrative and is mostly focused on the female figure. In my work I depict women’s strength and power and make visible the unheard stories of women. I use my art to communicate, bridge barriers, and to depict both reality and hope for a better world.
As the child of immigrants, molding clay, literally earth, into my own images helped to give me a sense of place and power in this country. Through my work in clay I have been able to find my voice, my vision, and my strength. My work has been healing and transformative for myself and for my community.
In my work with murals, I claim walls of my community as free and safe spaces. The simple act of my painting walls in my community is beautiful; as an openly queer muralist I am proclaiming my own right to exist as myself as important as all the other freedoms I portray.
I represent the beauty and power of everyday people, especially women of color. I have used my artwork to communicate, educate, affirm, inspire and convey a strong desire for justice and peace. In my work I depict the beauty, resilience and strength of the human spirit and the ability of people to rise above oppressive forces.
