Statement: I would call my current work "illustrations for stories that haven't been written yet." The style, media and size of my work are very like illustration, and most of my paintings suggest a slightly mysterious narative that the viewer is invited to fill in. But my subjects and compositions grow organically as I work, and I'm never sure what the result will be until I'm done. Though I paint people, I rarely use real models though I often borrow themes, faces, and gestures from the painters of the Renaissance. I have a background as a photographer--I worked for a number of years as a photo-journalist in Latin America--and I think that my work also owes something to this experience: to me the best photographs always suggest an unspoken story that goes beyond the specifics of the captured moment.
