Statement

As long as memory serves, I have been keenly observant of nature. My grandmother stimulated my childhood interest in gardening, and parents encouraged me. The perspective of much of my photographic work was perhaps honed by my immersion in biological collection (photographic) trips during high school, training as molecular geneticist, and a twelve year career in Biotechnology.

The garden my wife Andrea and I tend at our home in Dorchester is an intensive living palette painted by the two of us with thousands of plants collected over several decades. The continual learning process for these art forms, gardening, photography and woodworking has been deeply intertwined. Gardens are a constantly changing canvas ever unfolding with transient drama of light, color, and form. I strive to capture fleeting epiphanies through keen obervation and an intimate connection with our garden. The vast majority of my work is shot in the few hours following sunrise. Some of my work is also from the gardens of neighbors on Ashmont Hill and in the nearby Arnold Arboretum.

With the advent of hight resolution printers, richly colored archival ink sets, and an increasing range of fine art papers, I rely on a digital printing process.

I love the feel and organic nature of fine hardwoods for framing my works and building my furniture. In striving to hand craft my woodworking I have the pleasure of hunting for, exploring and working with the wonderful diversity of woods from around the world. Their pleasant natural beauty resonates with my work.
